The business
Trails 'n Tales was planned and initial investigations made in 1996 by Stephen Sawyer with a view to providing value-for-money holidays which showcased South Africa's natural assets while also introducing holidaymakers to the way of life which South Africa can offer. Having spent most of his life travelling South Africa and with a love for the bush and wildlife, Stephen has accumulated a wealth of knowledge of his homeland. In addition, he is a qualified field guide and member of The Field Guides Association of South Africa (FGASA). FGASA regulates the travel industry in South Africa and strives, amongst other things, to maintain standards relating to client safety and satisfaction as well as the grading of guides. In this way, the quality of your holiday is maintained as well as the accuracy of information given to you.
South Africa
South Africa has outstanding opportunities for travel, adventure and holidays which can be served by an operation like Trails ‘n Tales. Eco-tourism and adventure holidays are a growth area in the world and a strong indigenous demand in South Africa has prompted a development of those areas of tourism with accompanying competition amongst suppliers. This is good news for holidaymakers, providing a choice of options in terms of activities and locations within the adventure holiday field. South Africa is one of the world's friendliest and most enjoyable holiday destinations, offering a wide variety of experiences and activities and provides the added advantage of offering exceptional value for money. It is truly a "must-see" and with no jet-lag problems when flying from the UK, provides the ideal 2-week holiday break.
Trails 'n Tales holidays
South Africa is a great destination for sightseeing, the traditional form of tourism, but it can offer much more. Trails ‘n Tales aims to provide a holiday in South Africa which offers a look at some of South Africa’s natural beauty, wildlife and people together with an involvement in some of the many activities on offer. With regard to the Safaris, for example, instead of merely conducting a safari from a vehicle, three different types of safari are arranged, including a visit to an “orphan” project which provides a detailed scientific explanation of the animals and a walking tour during which the clients are accompanied by an armed ranger who explains the interaction of animals and environment. When offered a choice of activities in the Drakensberg, customers are given the choice of sleeping out in a mountain cave or returning to a lodge. Trips include many other activities, such as:
  • Mountain biking
  • Horse riding
  • Forest trails
  • Whale watching
  • Snorkelling trips
  • Walking safaris

How do we do it?
Where practical, a member of staff will visit potential customers to discuss options and plan a selected itinerary. Activities are selected on the basis that they provide entertainment and allow a client to experience something "out of the ordinary" while also providing an understanding of the area - there is no better way to get to know the Drakensberg than to hike them and no more intimate way to experience the forests of the Garden Route than to swing through the trees! Once a tour date is agreed and a set of activities decided on, a member of staff will accompany guests on all phases of the tour. This provides a far more personal touch than just being accompanied by a tour guide who meets with you on arrival.
All these styles of operation contribute towards making Trails 'n Tales way of doing things just that bit different and, we think, more enjoyable and memorable.
Adventure Holidays
Perhaps some explanation of the term "adventure holiday" is due. Many holidays in South Africa are undertaken on a "viewing" basis and without client participation. We have used the term "adventure holidays" as a means to convey that the trips are not merely sightseeing trips and do involve elements of adventure. That is not to say they are "white knuckle" rides. They will not be adventurous enough for true adventure seekers who want to travel unexplored lands or to wrestle crocodiles. However, nor should the term discourage anyone who is not sure of their own abilities. There are some challenges in these trips, notably the mountain hike, but like the adventures in life, they are surmountable and provide great fulfilment when overcome.
